You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here.

Whee! For Throwback Thursday (yeah, it’s still Thursday here), I give you Zork.

If you are asking what’s a Zork, I’m willing to bet that you were born after the NES came out. Xork was created in a day before computers could distract you with pictures of cats or kids doing stupid things and posting in on a website.

That’s right, it’s all about the text-based game, baby.

Zork is smart, fun, and addictive. (And, free on the Infocom website.) Every couple of years I play through the first three. (Yes, with the handy walkthrough nearby, I’ll admit.) I’ve played through the majority of the others over the years…it’s hard to believe that it’s been 16 years since the last one came out. (Though it was waaaay dark for my tastes.)

So, go. Stop cutting the rope or flinging birds in a galaxy far, far away and become a Master Adventurer.
